02 — Primary positioning

What Deed Poll Registry is for

Deed Poll Registry serves three groups: adults changing their own name, parents and guardians changing a child's name, and Muslim reverts adopting or adding an Islamic name.

Common reasons for a name change handled by the service include marriage, civil partnership, divorce, adoption, change of gender, personal preference, cultural or religious reasons, and correcting a spelling or clerical error.

Primary positioning: a fast, low-cost, private way to legally change a name in the UK. The customer applies online in a few minutes, receives a professionally drafted deed poll by tracked post, signs it in front of two witnesses, and uses it to update their passport, driving licence, bank, employer, HMRC and GP records.

Additional legal copies

2, 4, 8 or 12 extra copies at checkout. Many organisations ask for an original rather than a photocopy; eight is the recommended number.

Secure digital storage

A copy is kept on file so further originals can be ordered later. Needed to order replacement copies in future.

Priority processing

Orders received before 3pm on a working day are processed and shipped the same day. Orders after 3pm are processed first thing the next working morning.

04 — Process

How it works

1
Apply online

A short secure form: current name, new name, date of birth, nationality, reason for the change and a UK delivery address. Takes a few minutes.

2
Deed poll drafted

The deed poll is professionally drafted, printed and sealed in the UK.

3
Dispatched and delivered

Standard orders are usually dispatched within two working days by Royal Mail Tracked 24, which usually arrives in one to two working days. A tracking number is emailed on dispatch.

4
Sign and witness

Signed following the printed instructions, in front of two witnesses aged 18 or over who live in the UK and are not related to the applicant or living at the same address.

5
Use the new name

Once correctly signed and witnessed, the new name is legally effective immediately. The customer then updates their records.

No solicitor, court appointment or mosque letter is required.

05 — Deed poll type

Unenrolled, not enrolled

Deed Poll Registry issues unenrolled deed polls. Both types are legally valid and accepted by UK organisations, but only an enrolled deed poll is made public.

Practical facts about UK name changes

What can be changed

First name, middle names (added, changed or removed), surname, or full name. The new name cannot be offensive, promote crime, contain numbers or symbols, or be excessively long.

Passport

HM Passport Office normally wants evidence the new name is already in use, such as a bank statement, utility bill or GP letter dated within the last three months. Updating a bank first is the usual route.

Driving licence

DVLA does not require proof of name usage. The licence is updated with form D1, the deed poll and the current licence, with no fee.

Children

Everyone with parental responsibility must give written consent. If only one parent holds parental responsibility, only that parent's consent is needed.

Islamic names

Reverts are not required to change their name in Islam unless its meaning conflicts with Islamic teaching. Many add an Islamic name as a middle name. Arabic names are used on UK documents in English transliteration.

What does not change

A name change does not affect credit history, an NHS number or property ownership. Property records can be updated with HM Land Registry using the deed poll.
